There are currently over 190 teaching sequences on this site. The teaching sequences guide planning and help teachers to select the best teaching approaches to explore high quality texts in depth, enhancing reading comprehension and providing meaningful contexts and purposes for writing. Sequences are provided for every key stage from Nursery to Year 7. The sequences include cross-curricular links so that you can really put quality literature at the heart of your curriculum. They show you how you can embed the teaching of phonics, grammar, punctuation and spelling into a rich reading curriculum.
Examples of Practice
There are nearly 1500 practice examples which show how teachers have used these teaching materials and the Power of Reading training in their classrooms from Nursery throughout the primary age range. The examples show how schools across the country have been inspired to put quality children’s literature at the heart of their learning and create a whole school culture of reading for pleasure. There are examples of whole school reading environments, children’s writing outcomes, ideas for displaying work, recordings of children’s drama and role play and hundreds of opportunities to see how teachers have put the teaching sequences into practice.
The Power of Reading project has been delivered nationally and internationally for over a decade. It explores the core components of developing a vibrant reading community and supports schools in transforming their reading culture. This is an invaluable resource in supporting schools in developing a creative literacy curriculum and reinvigorating practice.
Each year we add new sequences, and new books to all the age groups and we update sequences to keep in line with statutory expectations. We add new classroom examples from our Power of Reading schools throughout the year.
