Group Reading in KS2

Explore the key skills and experiences involved in developing higher order reading skills in KS2, actively ensuring progress from KS1, which meet the needs of the National Curriculum 2014. Participants will investigate a variety of purposeful, creative and inclusive approaches designed to support children in group reading focusing on improving reader response and comprehension.

Participants will also consider the importance of the texts chosen for group reading and how these provide children with a breadth and range of texts to support their reading development. The course will focus on incorporating a range of strategies and activities designed to engage children in thinking critically about texts; developing reader response using a range of quality children’s books during group sessions. Each participant will receive a copy of a high quality children’s text to support learning back in school.

Course Aims:

  • Explore the skills and strategies involved in becoming a fluent reader to enable practitioners to support children in becoming competent and confident readers
  • Consider the continuum of children’s reading development and how to identify and teach next steps through a group reading approach
  • Reflect on the importance of the group approach and texts used to foster dialogic talk around texts and enhance reader reponse
  • Investigate practical strategies for using literature, talk and drama to engage children in response to reading to deepen understanding of what has been read

Participants will gain:

  • An overview of the fundamental principles that underpin the teaching of group reading in KS2
  • An understanding of the continuum of development of reading and how to target next steps in group reading
  • Quality CPD in the approaches that are research proven to raise pupils’ engagement and attainment in group reading
  • A high quality children’s text to support learning back in school
