Inspiring Writers KS2

28/03/2017 - 9:30am to 3:30pm

This course has been updated for 2016-2017 using new books and new teaching sequences. Participants will recieve a free book and 5 week teaching sequence for The Lost Happy Endings by Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray.

Participants on this course will explore the writing process in KS2, including ways to develop classroom literacy environments and key routines for writing in order to support children as writers. They will look closely at the important contribution made by quality texts and the use of creative approaches to develop language, imagination and structure thinking in preparation for writing.

Participants will have the opportunity to write across a range of genres to explore the importance of modelled writing. The course will also explore how to make writing a cohesive experience, including how to embed vocabulary, grammar and spelling in a text based unit of work.

  • To understand the importance of the relationship between reading and writing and examine the role literature can play in preparing children for writing
  • To explore the key approaches and contexts which support children to write for purpose and audience across a range of genres, using a high quality text as a starting point

  • Knowledge of how to plan for writing across genres in a text based unit of work showing children how to write for purpose and with an audience in mind
  • An awareness of how to contextualise the teaching of grammar and spelling in a context rich approach
  • A high quality text and teaching sequence to immediately implement aspects of the course in the classroom

‘Excellent ideas to inspire writing within a classroom to make writing relevant, fun and purposeful. It will help me to re-focus on texts, writing outcomes, collaborative learning, exploring themes within texts and purposeful writing activities’.

‘There were some great ideas that I will be able to adapt with other books. I very much liked the writing tasks and know the children will enjoy them. I have so enjoyed today and can’t wait to plan my English for next year.’
