David Crystal - Getting it Write conference June 2017

On 13 June 2017 70 delegates and CLPE staff welcomed renowned grammar and writing expert, David Crystal and award-winning children's author and zoologist, Nicola Davies to a conference which explored how to develop a whole school ethos for the enjoyment of writing. Delegates participated in workshops run by school based practitioners with CLPE advisory teachers. Please note that this conference is now passed

This conference centred on how this project, which has raised achievement in over 3500 schools nationally, transforms children’s enthusiasm for reading and the profound effect this has on attainment in reading and writing. This timely and important conference on 1 March considered the role that children’s literature plays in helping us make sense of the world around us and our place within it. Suitable for all those working with primary school children, we heared from legends of children's literature including Floella Benjamin and Elizabeth Laird and attendees took part in author and poet led workshops for EYFS to KS2. Raising Readers, Changing Lives Conference

This conference on 12 January 2017 was for all those working with children from the Early Years through to KS2. All children deserve to become readers and enjoy the lifelong benefits of reading for pleasure. This conference enabled delegates to explore the journeys that children make in order to become readers. They recognised that every child has different starting points and their rate and pattern of progression will depend on many factors. Please note that this conference is now past.

This conference of 13 June 2016 explored how drawing and illustration support writing. The keynote speaker was the inspirational Children's Laureate Chris Riddell and attendees participated in workshops with talented children's book illustrators Viviane Schwarz, Alexis Deacon and Benji Davies. This conference of 14 March 2016 was aimed at Early Years practitioners. The aim was to inspire and equip teachers to engage young children in story making, storytelling, and performance and featured an incredible line up of speakers including: Tina Bruce, Julia Donaldson and Katrice Horsley. This conference of 9 February 2016 introduced the new CLPE Reading and Writing Scales as a tool for teachers to inform classroom practice in the current educational landscape. Keynote speeches came from: Professor Teresa Cremin and Tanya Landman, author of Buffalo Soldier. Delegates took part in workshops to reflect on best practice in supporting children's reading and writing journey and a panel discussion about using the scales in school.
