Power of Pictures - sign up for subsidised training trial
Sign up for this subsidised training trial taking place in London, Brighton and Newcastle from September 2018 to July 2019
What is the Power of Pictures?
The Power of Pictures was devised by experts at CLPE in partnership with author/illustrator Ed Vere in 2013. The training supports all primary teachers in using picture books to enhance critical thinking and in developing creative approaches in art and writing alongside a professional.
Independent research findings from the last 3 years of training show:
- Discussion before writing helps children to have something to say and the vocabulary to say it
- Giving children the time to draw or express themselves creatively helps them to prepare for and develop writing
- Teachers understood much more about the writing process having heard authors describe how they developed their ideas
- Teachers found that when they understood the construction of picture books they realised how much of the story - including information about character and structure - was conveyed in the pictures
- Picture books are far more than just for the young or less able readers.
The training has transformed attitudes to writing for some schools.
The training will take place in 3 locations. As it is part of a trial the cost is heavily subsidised to just £200 per school. This cost includes 2.5 days of training and a half day workshop with an author to which schools will bring a year 5 class to participate.
Conditions for the training
As this is a Randomised Control Trial, 120 schools will be recruited for the 60 places available. This means 60 schools will get to take part in the full Power of Pictures training programme and the other 60 will be the control group, who will be tested on the evaluation measure, but will not get the programme input. They will, however, receive a £500 for being involved in the control part of the trial.
They will also need to commit to bringing that teacher’s Year 5 class to a creative writing workshop with the author/illustrator. We will confirm locations for these by the end of term in December 2017, ensuring they are in a radius that meets the potential of as many applicants as possible to do this.
Now: registration of interest is open. Please email [email protected] with the name and address of your school, telephone number and full name.
December 2017 - Confirmation of the locations for the workshops
End of February 2018 - Schools confirm that they would like to take part in the trial

Monday 14 May 2018 - Schools return the above paperwork. Without this paperwork completed, schools will not be considered for the trial
